Math with someone
Math with Someone actively involves students in learning. It allows students to have experience with talking and writing about mathematics. Students are involved in maximum participation as they listen, describe, and explain their thinking with peers. Each member has opportunities to contribute and take ownership of their learning. When students are given the opportunity to work in partners they become more self-sufficient and less reliant on the teacher for assistance; further, working with a partners increases involvement, attention, and collaboration (Boushey & Moser, 2006, p.60).
Working with a partner and collaborating with peers helps students identify, simplify, organize, express, and extend their thinking. It builds communication skills by both listening and speaking and it gives students opportunities to work and learn from each other. As students work together they are able to relate to their peers and benefit from structured interactions as they develop interpersonal skills that we use every day to communicate and interact with other people.
Math with Someone builds cooperation skills. When working with a partner, students develop skills such as turn taking, sharing, and problem solving. It also celebrates diversity as students are able to learn from people with various backgrounds and learning styles. Students are given the opportunity to become leaders and teach their peers. This builds confidence and creates a safe learning environment that includes all students.
Math with Someone can involve math games, various math tools and manipulatives, activity boards, and technology such as computers, ipads, tablets and smart boards.
