The goal of this website is to share a guided math framework utilizing The Daily 5 model. It will touch on both early and intermediate years. The Daily 5 model has been used in many schools to support inclusion during literacy block of a school day however, this website will explain how a teacher can apply this highly effective teaching model to improve math programming.
The Daily 5
The Daily 5 is literacy program developed by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser (the sisters). It contains a series of five literacy tasks that primary and intermediate students complete daily while the teacher works with small groups or confers with individuals. The Daily 5 was developed out of a desire to change the atmosphere in classrooms from micro-managing students, to creating routines and procedures that fostered independent literacy behaviors that were ingrained to the point of being habits. It is a structure that trains students to work independently as they discover the joys and develop the habits of daily reading and writing – without worksheets or centres, and sometimes (hang onto your hat) without a basal reader.
Math Daily 3
The sister have also started to develop a similar program for math called Math Daily 3. This is a framework for structuring math time so students develop deep conceptual understanding and math proficiency. Math with Someone, Math by Myself, and Math Writing are the Daily 3 that the students can choose from.
Teachers who have implemented this program state the Math Daily 3 produced productive, highly engaged students who are developing a true love of mathematics. students develop independence, stamina, and accountability and teachers are able to meet differentiated needs helping to ensure that all students meet standards.
